Windshield chip repair is generally effective for small, fresh chips about the size of a quarter. However, larger chips, cracks, or damage near the edge of the windshield may not be suitable for repair. While the goal is to prevent the chip from spreading and to improve visibility, there's no guarantee that the repair will be completely invisible or that it will prevent future damage.

Repairable Size

If the chip can be covered with a quarter, it most likely can be repaired. See the figure below:

Size of a quarter compared to a chip

No Repair Option If:

  • Damage is larger than a quarter.
  • The impact point is larger than 1/4 of an inch (diameter of an eraser on a #2 pencil).
  • The inside layer of the glass is broken.
  • The chipped area is within the "No Repair Zone" (see the information below).

No Repair Zone

The "No Repair Zone" is determined by placing this card on top of the steering wheel, with the red arrow over the center, while sitting in the driver's seat. If by looking forward the chip can't be seen, the windshield should be replaced.
