Dents and Dings: 3 Types of Dents You May Find on Your Vehicle

Lester Alvarez • Mar 14, 2019

dings and dentsDespite the fact that vehicles are extremely durable and reliable, your car can sometimes end up with dings and dents. This can be extremely frustrating, especially if you don’t know how it happened. While the Insurance Services Office shows that hail insurance claims for vehicle damage went up 48% in 2016, there are numerous possible causes of dents. So let’s take a look at a few common types of dents so you can better understand your dent repair options.

Round dents:  One of the most common types of dents are round dents. This type of damage is caused by round objects, like hail or rocks, hitting the car. These dents can either have a point in the middle or just consist of a shallow indent. Paintless dent removal is often a repair option for this damage because the dent can typically just be popped back out.

Sharp dents:  Unlike round dents, sharps dents may not be so easy to remove. These dents are deeper and more severe, often featuring a defined valley. This type of damage is typically caused by drivers opening their car door into another vehicle, resulting in sharp damage. While these dents are often more serious, they can still be fixed using the right techniques.

Creased dents:  When something, like a bike handlebar or tree limb, is dragged across the surface of a vehicle, a creased dent occurs. These types of dings and dents can actually tear and bend the metal of the vehicle, causing extensive damage. Not only is this damage severe, but if it’s left alone, it can actually result in further dents down the line. This is why it’s so important to get dents fixed sooner rather than later.

Hopefully, this article helped you better understand the common types of dents found on vehicles.
